Bakewell, the “ancient capital of the Peak District” in the north of England, is home to two pastries- the Bakewell tart and the lesser known Bakewell Pudding. Said to be the result of an incompetent cook’s error, using savoury rather than sweet pastry to make a jam pie for her mistress, the pudding caught on to become a local favourite.
A pretty, touristy town, sitting on the River Wye, Bakewell has an inordinate amount of gift shops, pubs and fish and chip shops. Getting away from the main strip we found tranquility in the bookshops, a small art gallery and the labyrinthine fabric shop, worth a visit for it’s many levels and hidden staircases. Afternoon tea in a seventeenth century tearoom was accompanied by Bakewell tart, a good match.

He seems to be doing pretty well. Finding school OK, making new friends, playing footie twice a week and playing soldiers (cadets) twice a week too. We’re getting used to him not being around but would love a bit more communication, not that we got much before …

I stopped in Bakewell on the way to Buxton for my honeymoon (with my ex husband) in 1990. We had a delicious lunch complete with Bakewell Pudding and suffered food poisoning for the rest of our trip …. we were a dreadful match so I have always rather felt that Bakewell was trying to tell me something and I have visited often since and thanked it! I thank you for this lovely post
