Dr D in Oz

I stand on the brow of a small hill on a genteel suburban street. It is just past sunrise and the light appears liquid and effervescent. Birds call to each other in enthusiasm for the new day. I look one way. I see mist rolling over the hills, creeping down to the plain below. I look the other way and there is ocean, today a silvery pane of glass, merging almost imperceptibly into a pink, grey infinite sky. A single wave breaks, unfurling along its crest, foaming onto the beach. Close your eyes and listen, and you can still picture it all.

“It’s a great day for seeing dolphins,” she said.

And as she said it the glassy waters darkened and there it was, not a dolphin, but a seal.

It’s impossible to tire of these views.
