Being jet-lagged provided the perfect opportunity to watch the sunrise- and the dawn rush hour. Early morning is the busiest time of day- the esplanade is a superhighway for runners, joggers, cyclists and insomniacs; the beach is awash with strollers, paddlers, photographers, dogs, owners, beachcombers inspecting the morning sea harvest (today hundreds of cuttlefish bones).
I stand on the brow of a small hill on a genteel suburban street. It is just past sunrise and the light appears liquid and effervescent. Birds call to each other in enthusiasm for the new day. I look one way. I see mist rolling over the hills, creeping down to the plain below. I
