Old harbour with port buildings and a blue boat

A perfect port

In an earlier post I proposed Huntly in the north east of Scotland as the best little town ever. However, with its seventeenth century harbour, narrow winding streets sloping down to the water, the famous Portsoy ice-cream and the nearby Glassaugh distillery, Portsoy wins hands down.

Stay at Durn House. This is a small country hotel within Portsoy with only seven themed bedrooms but five guest reception rooms! Receiving our dinner guests in the lounge, we had aperitifs in the upstairs guest sitting room, before heading downstairs to the drawing room to peruse the menu of regional specialities. Dinner was served in the small but stately dining room.

After dinner we headed downstairs to the “gentlemen’s club” for snooker and desserts– and a wee dram, of course!

For recovery, try a stroll down to the port and stop by the Port House where you can shelter from the sun (if you’re lucky) or the wind in its quaint courtyard whilst enjoying a tea or coffee, or browse in the maritime-themed gift shop.

On the way back (up the hill), a visit to Portsoy Ice Cream is a must.
